Small Business Dental Insurance: The Sole Proprietor
What kind of dental insurance do you need?
The specific type of Dental Insurance you need will, of course, depend very much on your specific circumstances.
Most of the details you take into consideration when you're looking at Dental insurance will be the same as those you considered when you were choosing your general medical plan. The variables will include your actual type of work, your family situation, your financial commitments etc.
If you're genuinely a one man show, with no help from even a spouse, you'll need to look at plans which offer maximum flexibility.
A comprehensive dental insurance plan will include at least some cover for all of the most commonly performed dental procedures. Another aspect of a comprehensive dental plan is that it covers pre-existing conditions and has no deductible. There are some dental insurance plans that don't have claim forms or that add cover for the eyes to the scheme.
You may prefer to look at discount schemes which are much more readily available nowadays. These schemes are a bit like the Dining Clubs - you pay an annual “membership” fee and then claim discounts every time you go to the dentist. As a generalisation, the joining fee to such a program will cost considerably less than a full Dental Plan but the discounts will be far less then reimbursements from full feature dental plans. If your teeth are going to need much attention, you may well find that the costings are marginal and you'll need careful thought and calculation before you decide which way to go.

What are the costs?
The cost of a Dental Plan will, of course, vary according to the scope of the cover you opt for and whether or not you include your family in it. A plan that covers an individual for Dental care with associated prescription medication is going to start at around £30.00 per month for a single person or around £50.00 for a family plan - adding vision and chiropody would not make a huge difference. A discount club membership is likely to have a much lower starting fee (a basic plan may be as little as $9.95 for an individual membership) but the discounts will not be as much as the reimbursements you'll get from a comprehensive plan.
